DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College women's soccer team opened the 2018 slate with a 4-3 win over the Penn St. – Brandywine Lions in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday.
Emily Caldarelli put away the opening goal of the game in the ninth minute of the game when she corralled a failed defensive clearance off a shot by Mackenzie Forsythe and put away the goal. Brandywine's Brianna Banks responded with a goal of their own 10 seconds later.
Caldarelli put Wesley back up one in the 17th minute when she made her defender fall outside of the corner of the box and curled a shot around the goalie. The 2-1 score would hold into the halftime break.
Banks would tie up the game at two in the 47th minute but Janiah Moore countered with a goal of her own 33 second later. Lauren O'Sullivan found Moore on a through ball, Moore turned at the top of the box, shot the ball off the crossbar and bounced in the net.
After Banks scored her third goal of the game on a penalty shot, Brionna Olesky found Moore off a pass from the wing on a counter attack and scored on a one-timer in the 55th minute to give Wesley the 4-3 lead. The Wesley defense held strong to seal the win.
Isabelle Fabris recorded the win in net after stopping five shots.
The Wolverines (1-0) will hit the road on Saturday to take on the Washington Adventist Shock. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m.
