ASTON, Pa. - After earning a nail-biting win in their season opener the Wesley College Women's Basketball team could not come away with a repeat effort, falling to Neumann University 65-50 on Friday evening at the Mirenda Center.
Wesley fell behind early as Neumann jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three straight buckets, but Brittney Kerns got the team on the board with a three to cut the lead in half. Back-to-back layups by Tiyanna Gibbs and Alexus Stroud gave Wesley a 7-6 lead but the Knights finished the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 16-11 lead at the break.
In the second quarter the Wolverines stormed back to take a 21-20 lead midway through the frame. Once again Neumann responded finishing the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 27-23 lead into the halftime break.
In the third, Wesley drew back to within one point but the Knights' offense was too hot to handle. Neumann shot 10-for-12 in the third quarter, scoring 26 points to open up a 53-39 lead heading into the final quarter.
Wesley attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, led by freshman Paige Hailstock who drilled two threes to open the frame. The comeback fell well short though as the Wolverines were held scoreless over the final 5:13 of regulation, falling 65-50 to the Knights.
Wesley moves to 1-1 on the season and will play again on Saturday in Neumann's consolation game. Their opponent is to be determined.
