IMMACULATA, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Wesley College softball team completed their three-game sweep in Atlantic East Conference Pod B with a 6-2 win over the host and second seed Immaculata on Sunday to advance to next weekend's Atlantic East Championship Series.
Immaculata struck first for two runs in the top of the first before Karina Cardona opened the scoring for Wesley in the second inning with her seventh home run of the season on a solo shot to left center field to cut the Immaculata lead in half.
Back-to-back singles in the third inning put Brooke Retkowski in scoring position, Ashley Royer plated Retkowski from second base on an RBI single up the middle. Megan DiRubbio gave Wesley the 3-2 lead in the third when she scampered home from third on an RBI fielder's choice by Gabriella Monzo.
Wesley followed up with a pair of runs in the fourth inning when Retkowski hit her second home run in as many days with a two-run bomb over the center field fence.
Wesley added another run of insurance in the fifth when Royer led the inning off with a triple and then scored on an error by the Immaculata shortstop.
After giving up the two runs in the first, Dori Loukopoulos effectively shut down the Immaculata offense. Loukopoulos only allowed three base runners following the first inning and retired the Immaculata side in order during the final four innings of the game.
Wesley (19-20) will take on the winners of Pod A and the top seed in the conference tournament Neumann in the best-of-three Atlantic East Conference Championship Series. The first game is set for Friday at 4 p.m. in Aston, Pa. Saturday's slate starts at 10 a.m. with an if necessary game following.
