Women’s basketball battles with Marywood in Atlantic East Conference competition

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College women's basketball team fell at home, 65-54 to the Marywood Pacers in an Atlantic East Conference contest on Saturday.

Marywood jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, scoring the game's first three buckets. Following the early deficit, two 3-pointers drained by Angelique Gathers and a Shelby Johnson layup from gave Wesley the 8-7 advantage with 5:27 remaining in the quarter. Each team would exchange leads the rest of the quarter ending with Maywood taking a 17-16 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter began much like the first, with Marywood scoring the first six points. Wesley would battle back by way of two layups by Monshea Newsome-Murray to be down by only three, 23-20 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. Marywood would end the second quarter on a 15-7 run to take a 35-27 lead into the half.

Much of the second half saw Wesley attempting to chip away at Marywood's lead, but the Marywood defense held tough and would survive the Wesley comeback attempt. Wesley's 43-38 deficit with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter would be the closest they would get to the lead.
