Softball drops first game of Atlantic East Championship Series to Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – The Wesley College softball team dropped the opening game of the best-of-three Atlantic East Conference Championship Series on Friday to the Neumann Knights, 5-1.

Neumann scored three runs in the third inning when Grace Sperrazza scored on a sacrifice fly Jackie Selby. Two batters later, Kierstin Fallers drove in two on an RBI single. Neumann went up 5-0 behind back-to-back RBIs from Sperrazza and Bri Lagroteria in the sixth inning.

Wesley was able to get on the board in the seventh. After Gabreilla Monzo opened the inning with a single, Allison Mills pinch ran for her and was moved over to third base on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Curry, Karina Cardona plated Mills on an RBI groundout to shortstop. The lone run was all Wesley could get in the final frame.

Monzo, Megan DiRubbio, Ashley Royer and Miranda Kinney each notched a hit in the loss.

Wesley will wrap up the Atlantic East Championship Series tomorrow with Neumann. Wesley needs to win two to win the league championship. Due to inclement weather forecasted in the morning around the Philadelphia area, first pitch of game two has been moved back to 1 p.m. The if-necessary game will follow if Wesley beats Neumann in game two.
