WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Wesley College softball team took down the Gallaudet Bison, 8-4 in a make-up of their rescheduled game from last Sunday.
Wesley got to Gallaudet early with two runs in the second inning. After Dori Loukopoulos reached on an error and advanced on a passed ball, Karina Cardona singled to right to score Loukopoulos from second. Brooke Retkowski followed with a triple past the diving right fielder to plate Cardona.
Wesley stretched the lead to six with a four-run third inning. Bianca Newsom opened the inning with a double to left field before Brandi Dalious smacked her second home run of the season with a two-run shot to left field. After an Ashley Royer walk and a stolen base, Loukopoulos brought Royer home on an RBI single up the middle. Lauren Hoffman scored the fourth run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Retkowski.
Gallaudet cut the lead in the middle innings, scoring a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Wesley then put insurance runs on the board in the sixth when Royer knocked her first home run of the season on a two-run bomb to left field.
Loukopoulos struck out seven batters and only allowed four runs and three hits in four innings of work to earn her second win of the young season. Abbey Mayse picked up her first collegiate save, pitching three innings of shutout relief and striking out two.
Newsom, Dalious and Cardona each notched two hits in the win. Dalious and Royer both registered a two-run home run in the win.
Wesley and Gallaudet attempted to play the second game of the doubleheader, but the game was called in the fourth inning due to darkness with the Wolverines up 8-0 on the Bison.
The Wolverines (2-1) will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Stevenson Mustangs. First pitch of the twin bill is set for noon from DuPont Field.
