Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Scranton in 2014 Opener

DOVER, Del. – Sam Seibert recorded a career-high five points as the Wesley College's men's lacrosse team was victorious over Scranton, 9-8, n the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium.

A native of New Castle, Del., Seibert was one of two Wolverines (Mike Rakos) to notch a hat trick on the day while also dishing out a pair of assists.  Jathan Mahaffey (2g), Drew Hammer (2a) and Jack Redefer (1g, 1a) also had multi-point efforts on the day as Sam Kennedy made a career-high 16 saves between the pipes.

The Royals got out to an early two-goal lead but a pair of Seibert goals sandwich another Scranton goal as Wesley trailed, 3-2, after one quarter of play.  Seibert got his hat trick in a defensive-minded second quarter and the teams went into the half tied at three.

Wesley erupted out of the break, scoring four-straight goals to start the fourth quarter.  Seibert found Mahaffey to start the run and Rakos scored twice with a Redefer tally in between.  Scranton did bounce back, however, closing the third with a pair of goals and scoring the first in the final quarter to cut the deficit to 7-6 with just under 11 minutes left to play.

Rakos notched his hat trick just over four minutes later on an assist by Redefer, but the Royals came back with a pair of goals to tie the score with 31 ticks left.  On the ensuing faceoff, Alex Linder won the ground ball and fed Mahaffey for the game-winning goal which came with eight seconds remaining.

Defensively, Jack O'Neill picked a game-high six ground balls while four different Wolverines caused turnovers.

Scranton was led by Anthony Lombardo's four points on two goals and two assists while Brian Quinn added a pair of goals and an assist.  In goal, Nicholas McKaba stopped 20 of Wesley's 35 shots.

The Navy & White return to the pitch on February 26 when they host No. 9 Washington College for a 4 pm faceoff.
