Men’s basketball drops close game to Roanoke in Cregger Invitational Championship

ROANOKE, Va. – The Wesley College men's basketball team lost a hard-fought game, 79-76 to the Roanoke Maroons in the championship game of the Cregger Invitational on Sunday 

The back-and-forth contest saw 18 lead changes and seven ties. Roanoke took the 77-73 lead when C.J. Miles hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds to go in regulation. Brian Cameron pulled the Roanoke lead within one when he drained a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation.

After a Wesley foul, Eli Sumpter made both of his free throws to push the Roanoke lead to three points with four seconds left in the game. Wesley had a chance to tie and force overtime when Evan Anderson had a good look from three-point range but the shot rimmed out to give Roanoke the championship. 

Mychal Stefanides led Wesley with a season-high 32 points. Stefanides was 10-of-21 from the field and 8-of-15 from beyond the three-point line. He also recorded four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Paul Clemons registered his first double-double of the year. Clemons tallied 14 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Clemons was 6-of-7 from field and knocked down both of his free throw attempts.

Brian Cameron also scored double figures for Wesley, notching 12 points. Cameron added six rebounds, five assists and two steals. George Cook picked up nine points and four assists off the bench.

Cameron and Stefanides were named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the invitational. Cameron totaled 40 points, 12 points, seven assists and four steals while Stefanides collected 39 points, eight assists, six rebounds and five steals in the tournament.

The Wolverines return home on Wednesday to take on the Immaculata Mighty Macs. Tip-off from Wentworth Gymnasium is scheduled for noon.
