DOVER, Del. – A defensive battle on an overcast homecoming Saturday saw the Wesley College football team drop a close 10-9 game to the Montclair St. Red Hawks in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

Wesley came out the gates fast. Two plays after the defense forced a three-and-out to start the game, E.J. Lee busted through the middle of the Montclair defense for a 50-yard touchdown run. A bobbled snap on the extra point only gave Wesley a six-point lead two and a half minutes into the game.

Right before the end of the first quarter, Wesley's 14-play drive stalled out inside the Montclair five-yard line. But, Nick Bruhn was able to convert a 21-yard field goal to give Wesley the 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Montclair was able to get a 33-yard field goal by Hunter Daly with four seconds to go in the first half to cut into the Wesley lead before the teams headed to the locker room.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter. On Montclair's opening possession of the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks capitalized two plays after an offsides penalty on a missed field goal with a six-yard touchdown reception by Kason Campbell from Ja'Quill Burch. A Hunter Daly PAT would give Montclair the 10-9 lead with 11:56 left in regulation.

Wesley had their chances to take the lead after Montclair took the lead. Wesley was able to get down to the one-yard line before a fumbled center-quarterback exchange was recovered by Montclair. On Wesley's next drive, the Wolverines were able to drive down the field into the Montclair red zone. Their drive stalled inside the 10-yard line, but Bruhn's 23-yard field goal attempt clanked the right upright to give Montclair the ball back. Montclair was able to run the clock out and spoil homecoming for Wesley.

Wesley outgained Montclair 394-223 in total offense. E.J. Lee combined for 180 yards of total offense. He carried the ball 18 times for 121 yards and a score. Lee also added six catches out of the backfield for 59 yards.

Khaaliq Burroughs was 21-for-37 passing for 233 yards and an interception. Alex Kemp reeled in seven passes for 92 yards. Ruhann Peele caught six passes for 58 yards.

Dante Daniel led the Wesley defense with a game-high 17 tackles. Cappadonna Miller and Isiah Mitchell each picked off a Ja'Quill Burch pass. Shawny'e Jones notched nine tackles while Nazir Williams recorded seven tackles.

Wesley (5-3, 4-3 NJAC) will be on the road next Saturday when they make the short trip down to Route 13 to take on the No. 25 Salisbury Sea Gulls. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
