Baseball splits opening day of Atlantic East Pod A

RADNOR, Pa. – The sixth-seeded Wesley College baseball team advanced to the final day of Pod A in the Atlantic East Conference Baseball Tournament after splitting two games on Friday. Wesley dropped the opener, 13-2, to host and top seed Cabrini before rallying to take down the third seed Immaculata, 11-8.

Wesley scored both of their runs in the fourth inning in the opening game of Pod A against Cabrini.

Alexander Weber opened the fourth inning with his first collegiate home run with a solo shot to left center. After John Joines reached on a single, William Musser knocked in Joines on an RBI single through the left side with two outs.

Weber, Musser and Jordan Marucci all went 2-for-4 in the game. Musser struck out six in his first appearance on the mound since Feb. 15.

Wesley 11, Immaculata 8

Wesley fell behind 8-6 heading to the final three innings of the game before scoring a run in the seventh and four in the ninth to take the 11-8 come-from-behind win over Immaculata.

Wesley and Immaculata traded the lead back-and-forth before Immaculata got up two heading to the seventh. Wesley started their comeback in the seventh inning when Dustin Sutton smacked a double to allow Jason Boc to scamper in from third base to cut the Immaculata to 8-7.

In the ninth, Wesley loaded the bases with no outs. Kyle Schneider scored from third base when John Joines reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to tie the game at eight.

A batter later, Marucci gave Wesley the one-run lead when he beat out an infield single that allowed Sutton to score from third base. Wesley added insurance runs later in the inning when Joines scored on a throwing error by the Immaculata second baseman and Musser followed with an RBI single to plate Marucci.

Sutton shut down the Immaculata in the ninth in order to secure the victory for Wesley.

Wesley notched 22 hits against Immaculata. Marucci and Boc led the way for Wesley going 4-for-6 at the plate. Marucci knocked in four runs and scored twice while Boc recorded two doubles in the win.

Weber, Musser and Sutton all collected three hits. Sutton added three runs scored along with earning the win on the mound.

Up Next

Wesley will face Immaculata again on Saturday in an elimination game. First pitch of the game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The winner will advance to face Cabrini in the Pod A final at 2 p.m.
