Baseball battles in a close contest with York

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College baseball team outhit the York (Pa.) Spartans 13-10 in a Wednesday non-conference matchup but were defeated, 7-5.

York scored three runs in the first inning before Wesley got two runs back in the bottom of the second. Jason Boc scampered home from third base on a double play for Wesley's first run of the game. A batter later, Brock Wingate came into score on an infield single by Dustin Sutton.

Wesley was able to tie the game at three in the bottom of the fifth inning when William Foster hit a bloop single into shallow left field that allowed John Joines to score from second base.

York recorded three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead but Wesley got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning when William Musser smacked a two-run single to center field to bring around Joines and Jordan Marucci to cut the York lead down to 6-5.

York got an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when Brandon White scored Grant Oberholtzer on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Wesley was able load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, York's Conor Miller induced back-to-back foul outs by Boc and Wingate to pick up the save.

Eight of the nine Wesley batters registered a hit in the loss. William Foster went 3-for-5 with a double and a run batted in. Cory Joines and Jordan Marucci each went 2-for-4. William Musser drove in a pair of runs while John Joines scored twice.

Wesley continues their three-game homestand on Thursday when they conclude their season series with former Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary's. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
