SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-seeded Wesley College baseball team was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship Tournament on Friday. The Wolverines dropped a pair of contests to the No. 1 seed Salisbury Sea Gulls and the No. 6 seed Mary Washington Eagles.
Wesley dropped the first game of the day, 25-10 to host Salisbury Sea Gulls.
Chris Seibert paced the Wolverine offense with his team-leading ninth home run of the year. Seibert went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. John Joines and Cody Dmiterchik each had two hits for the Wolverines while Joines added a double.
The back-and-forth shootout in the second game of day didn't go in Wesley's favor as they fell 16-11 to the Mary Washington Eagles.
After Mary Washington scored first in the first inning, Wesley scored three in the top of the second. Edward Hogan plated the first run of the second on a single through the right side that scored Briggs from third. With the bases loaded, Michael Piccirillo came around to score on a fielding error by the Mary Washington shortstop. Hogan scored later in the inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Mears.
Mary Washington took the 7-4 lead behind runs in the third and fourth innings but Wesley fought back to regain the lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Wesley made it a 7-6 game in fifth when Dmiterchik brought home Will Barton on a RBI double to left center. Dmiterchik scored with two outs on a wild pitch that trickled past the catcher.
A six-run inning gave Wesley the 11-7 lead in the sixth. Barton drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Piccirillo to come around to score. Dmiterchik followed with a RBI single to left field. After a pitching change by Mary Washington, Mears cracked the second pitch he saw over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Mary Washington tallied nine runs in the seventh and staved off the Wesley comeback attempts to eliminate the Wolverines from the tournament.
Dmiterchik and Piccirillo each recorded three hits and two runs scored while Dmiterchik drove in three. Mears notched a grand slam and totaled five runs batted in for the Wolverines. Hogan and Barton had two hits respectively while Barton added two runs scored.
The Wolverines finish third in the CAC Championship Tournament with an overall record of 19-15 and a regular season CAC record of 9-9.
